Hire a TENS Machine Near You

A tens machine is a wonderful tool and easily accessible to hire or purchase. It can be safely used at home, on the way to hospital and while you are there too. A TENS machine is a small, battery-operated device that has leads connected to sticky pads called electrodes.

How to Use a Tens Machine in Labour?

We recommend knowing how to use the tens machine BEFORE your labour begins so that it's nice and easy to put on when you need it. You attach the pads directly to your skin. When the machine is switched on, small electrical impulses are delivered to the affected area of your body, which you feel as a tingling sensation.

In our BirthTools Online Birth Class we have a video on how to use different natural pain relief techniques for you and your birth partner....here is a sample!

Do TENS Machines Work?

Yes, they certainly do, but whether you like the feel of them during labour is going to be an individual preference. It feels like a buzzing sensation and if you have an Elle Tens Machine, which is made specifically for labour pain, then you will feel a stronger sensation during the contraction.

It works by sending electrical impulses that aim to disrupt the pain signals going to the spinal cord and brain, which may help relieve pain and relax muscles. They also stimulate the production of endorphins, which are the body's natural painkillers.

Most women love the use of their tens machine and found it was a great way to labour longer at home.

BirthTools Tip
Start using your tens machine when you begin to feel the need to go to hospital. Using it earlier can be a waste of this tool. "

Where can I hire a TENS Machine?

Before you go out and hire this little tool, there are a few ways you can get a tens machine for freefree or at least at a low cost!

Doula or Midwife

If you have hired a doula or a midwife, be sure to ask if they have one that they let their clients use when they are with you in labour. The only downside is usually they only carry one with them and so you wont get it ahead of time. This means that if you are in early labour and want to use the tens machine, you can't unless they're present!

Online Forums

So many women have purchased their own tens machine because the cost isn't actually too great.  Why don't you try hoping on facebook marketplace and see if you can score a deal?

Your Hospital

Some hospitals are actually hiring out tens machine's to women, usually at a reasonable cost. Make sure to ask them at one of your appointments how you can get your hand on one. My advice is to make sure they are an 'elle tens' brand though. You don't want a generic tens machine as they don't have the automated "boost mode."
